The most meaningful new development this morning is emerging from Midland’s Produced Water Society Permian Basin Conference, where the conversation around produced water has moved closer to the AI and data-center infrastructure story. At the same time, new federal production estimates reinforce just how much natural gas supply the Permian could bring to that buildout.
1. Produced-water reuse is becoming increasingly relevant to the Permian AI buildout
New reporting from the Produced Water Society conference in Midland says the Permian is currently generating roughly 21 million barrels of produced water per day, with volumes projected to reach approximately 28 million barrels per day by 2036. Disposal constraints, rising formation pressures and tighter injection-well permitting are increasing the need for large-scale beneficial reuse.
TETRA Technologies CEO Brady Murphy highlighted industrial reuse as one of the potential destinations for treated water and specifically connected the issue to the rapidly expanding Texas data-center market. TETRA says its Oasis Total Desalination Solution has demonstrated approximately 92% water recovery, producing very high-quality treated water from difficult produced-water streams.
Why it matters
This is important because two Permian infrastructure problems may increasingly intersect:
Oil and gas operators need alternatives to disposal.
AI developers need large, dependable water supplies that do not compete with municipal freshwater.
If treatment economics can be made competitive, the enormous produced-water stream of the Delaware and Midland basins could become an industrial asset for data centers rather than solely a disposal liability.
That would strengthen a distinctive Permian development model:
Natural gas + dedicated generation + treated produced water + fiber + large land positions = AI infrastructure.
The key unresolved issue is economics. Treatment technology can work technically, but a hyperscale data center ultimately needs confidence in cost, reliability, water chemistry, permitting and long-term supply agreements.
2. Permian natural-gas production is heading toward another record
New EIA-derived reporting says U.S. marketed natural-gas production is expected to average approximately 122.5 Bcf per day in 2026, a new record.
The Permian is one of the principal drivers.
Permian gas production is projected to average approximately 29.2 Bcf per day in 2026, about 6% higher than 2025. Rising associated-gas production and increasing gas-to-oil ratios are contributing to the growth.
Why it matters
This creates an extraordinary convergence with the AI infrastructure boom.
A Permian Basin producing close to 30 Bcf of gas every day is simultaneously attracting several of the largest proposed gas-to-power AI campuses in the country.
That means AI could become an entirely new structural source of local gas demand.
Instead of Permian molecules traveling hundreds of miles through pipelines before being converted into electricity elsewhere, an increasing amount could theoretically follow a much shorter value chain:
Wellhead → gathering system → pipeline → dedicated turbine → electricity → GPU.
The economic opportunity is larger than simply selling additional natural gas. Producers, midstream companies and landowners could potentially participate in generation, power contracts, infrastructure development and even data-center joint ventures.
3. ERCOT’s next critical policy dates are approaching
ERCOT’s Batch Zero process remains interrupted following Governor Abbott’s comprehensive data-center audit. ERCOT has formally stated that it will seek a good-cause exception from the Public Utility Commission before the August 20 PUCT meeting rather than issue the Batch Zero classifications that had originally been scheduled for August 7.
ERCOT’s calendar also now shows a Batch 1+ and Comprehensive Transmission Planning Workshop scheduled for August 31, indicating that the longer-term large-load planning process continues even while Batch Zero remains disrupted.
Why it matters
Every additional period of uncertainty increases the strategic value of projects that can obtain first power without depending entirely upon a conventional ERCOT interconnection.
That is particularly relevant to West Texas projects proposing:
behind-the-meter natural-gas generation, private grids, batteries and eventual ERCOT interconnection.
The August 20 PUCT meeting therefore remains one of the most important policy events to watch this month.
